PREVENTION OF NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS AND OTHER HEALTH RISKS THROUGH FOLIC ACID EDUCATION

ONLINE CME COURSE

JOINTLY SPONSORED BY SWEDISH MEDICAL CENTER AND THE MARCH OF DIMES

Course Description:
This course is designed to enhance the understanding of preconceptual folic acid supplementation amongst health care professionals and to effectively identify under-educated patient populations.

We expect learners to develop familiarization with the various health benefits of folic acid supplementation, and we expect participants will want to adopt the guidelines of leading health agencies such as the CDC and NIH pertaining to folic acid use.

Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the role of birth defects in infant morbidity and mortality, particularly neural tube defects (NTD's).
  • Understand the relationships between folic acid, folate, the general health benefits of folic acid consumption, and the prevention of NTD's.  Understand issues of bioavailability, sources, limitations, and necessary timing of education.
  • Familiarize oneself with the recommendations and goals of various partnered public health agencies in educating women of childbearing age on the importance of folic acid.
  • Assume a more active and effective role as a public health educator on the topic of folic acid in preconception care.
  • Know where to obtain further patient education resources.
