Swedish Medical
Center/First Hill/Ballard/Cherry
Hill
Swedish Medical Center was founded in 1910 by Dr. Nils Johanson
and a group of Seattle’s leading Swedish-born businessmen whose
abilities and efforts had brought them success in this new land.
What started as a 24-bed facility in a converted two-story apartment
building has evolved into a 697-bed, not-for-profit medical center
occupying 25 city blocks. In 1992, Swedish merged with the 63-bed
Ballard Community Hospital. On July 1, 2000, the 436-bed Providence
Seattle Medical Center also became part of the Swedish system. In
addition to general medical and surgical care, Swedish is known
as a regional referral center providing treatment in the areas of
oncology, cardiac care, high-risk obstetrics, neurosciences, orthopedic
surgery and organ transplantation. Swedish also boasts a number
of specialty programs, including sleep disorders, a pain-management
program, and home health and hospice services.
Over the past
92 years Swedish Medical Center has grown into the Northwest’s largest,
most comprehensive health-care facility representing virtually all
diagnostic and surgical specialties. Swedish now boasts more than
6,710 employees and a medical staff of more than 2,379 providers
between the First Hill, Ballard and Cherry Hill campuses. Directed
by a volunteer Board of Trustees comprised of business leaders and
physician representatives, Swedish enjoys a reputation for quality
care that is recognized internationally.
Surgical
Residents' Clinic
The Surgical Residents’ Clinic, operated by fifth-year surgical
residents, provides quality medical and surgical care to patients
unable to pay. The concept for the clinic originated several decades
ago when it was determined that the hospital should establish a
program to provide free or low-cost medical care to patients in
need and give practical experience to physicians in their final
year of residency. The clinic was made possible through the generosity
of the late Paul F. Glaser, president of Glaser Beverage Co. and
the Glaser Foundation, and a longtime supporter of Swedish.
Support Services
Swedish offers excellent supporting departments, including pathology,
medical imaging, laboratory medicine, nuclear medicine, radiation
therapy and pulmonary therapy. Intensive-care units for cardiac
and non-cardiac problems provide care for acutely ill patients and
excellent training in critical-care medicine for the residents.
The Swedish Cancer Institute provides expertise in the total care
of patients with neoplastic disease, and a base for oncologic research
support.
Other Residency
Programs
The medical center also offers a full residency program in Family
Medicine. Many other programs in the area send their residents
to Swedish Medical Center for portions of their training. At any
given time, there will be residents in diagnostic radiology, obstetrics
and gynecology, pathology and anesthesia from University of Washington
programs; residents in orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology and urology
from the Madigan Army Medical Center programs; and anesthesia residents
from the Virginia Mason Medical Center program.
