Instructions
for Applicants
Appointments
to the R1 categorical and preliminary programs are made through
the National Resident Matching
Program (NRMP, “the match”). All applicants must be registered
with the match. Two positions are designated as Preliminary (NRMP
number 1755440P0) and two positions are designated as Categorical
(NRMP number 1755440C0). Submission and appointment dates are those
of the NRMP.
Applications
will be accepted only through the Electronic
Residency Application Service for General Surgery (ERAS) beginning
with 2000-2001 academic year applicants. You may send additional
data to be added to your file or used in consideration for candidacy
for a personal interview. Please send any additional data to the
address listed below. Copies of research and publications are not
considered helpful pieces of information, but a more thorough curriculum
vitae or additional letters of recommendation are considered useful.
Applicants who have complete applications available on the ERAS
system will be notified of invitation for an interview by telephone,
mail and the ERAS system. Applicants who are not invited to interviews
will be notified by mail and via the ERAS system. A complete application
is defined as containing the following elements:
- An application
on the ERAS system
- A personal
statement
- A curriculum
vitae
- USMLE scores
- A dean's
letter from your medical school
- A transcript
from your medical school
- Three letters
of recommendation
Special Notes
About Applications and Interviews:
Appointments to positions above the R1 level, although seldom available,
are made directly by the Surgical Residency Program. If you’re interested
in one of those positions, the aformentioned application materials
need to be submitted with a letter requesting an upper level position.
Personal interviews
are requested of all applicants and are offered starting in early
November through early February. We interview on Thursdays, and
the applicants are expected to be available for the entire day.
Occasionally, interviews are extended outside the usual interview
season, if requested, due to special circumstances such as medical
students who are in the area doing clinical externships at other
facilities, etc. Please do not hesitate to ask for special consideration.
We will do our best to accommodate your request. Please feel free
to call (206) 386-2123 at any time with questions about the
application process or to check the status of your application.
