General Surgery Externships

SMC

Swedish Medical Center offers externship positions to medical students who have completed their third year of training, including their basic clerkships. This should not be regarded as a clerkship, as no formal classroom experience is provided other than that gained in the regularly scheduled resident teaching conferences. The experience provided is primarily in the form of ward and operating room patient care. Externships are offered for a maximum of four (4) weeks only.

Applications are accepted from Foreign Medical Students, applying for the months of March through May only. United States medical students with a strong interest in General Surgery residency training will always have priority consideration for externship opportunities. The Surgery Residency Advisory Committee meets monthly, at which time externship applications are reviewed for acceptance or rejection.

The extern will be assigned to one of two Chief Residents and will work with him/her and other members of the Resident Staff and with the members of the Teaching Staff in the care of their patients. Appropriate responsibility will be assigned to the student but all work will be closely supervised. Externs will assume night call responsibility, rotating with the senior level Resident to whom they are assigned.

The Medical Center does not provide stipends, room, board, uniforms, or malpractice insurance for these positions.  However, we provide a parking permit for the garage while you are here.

Please read the Course Description below for complete details:
