R1 - $43,700
R2 - $45,800
R3 - $47,900
R4 - $50,000

Benefits
Residents are offered their choice of several medical insurance
plans. They may add family members to their plan at an additional
fee. All of the medical insurance plans available offer coverage for
eye exams and eyewear. A life-insurance policy with death benefits
is provided to every resident as an employee, along with long-term
disability and worker’s compensation. Dental insurance is also
provided at the same level as every other Swedish employee with
dental benefits for family members provided at a low cost. The
Medical Center provides professional liability insurance for each
resident for all activities performed in conjunction with the
training program. The liability insurance does not cover any
additional work performed outside the training program
Housing
Swedish
does not maintain a real-estate referral service; however, many
notices of available homes and apartments are sent to the hospital
administration office and are available through the Surgical
Residency office.
Work Hours
and Quarters
On-call
schedules are based on fourth-night rotations on most services,
complying with the regulations related to resident supervision and
work hours. A house-staff lounge and on-call sleep rooms are
available in the hospital.
Meals
Meal cards are provided for meals when on night call.
Uniforms
Uniforms (and laundry service for uniforms) are provided by the
hospital.
Parking and
Security
Parking
is covered by the program for all residents. Residents are provided
with a combination name-badge and parking card and assigned to one
of the most convenient parking garages for secure parking. Although
the area surrounding the Medical Center is not considered a
high-crime area, security guards are available at all hours to
provide escort service to and from the parking garages at the
resident’s request. The Security and Engineering departments of the
Medical Center are also equipped to assist with charging batteries
and unlocking doors should the need arise.
Vacation/Professional
Leave
All
residents are entitled to 15 days paid vacation per year. First-year
residents are allowed three days off to attend a local meeting.
Second, third, fourth, and fifth-year residents are allowed five
days off to attend an educational meeting. Financial support to
attend a meeting will be provided to R2s to R5s
Other Benefits
The surgery
residents are provided $200 per year for the purchase of personal
textbooks. This money can be used at the residents’ discretion.
Since the Surgery Residents Lounge/Library is well stocked with
current textbooks for the exclusive use of the surgery residents,
many of the residents decide to accumulate their book stipend from
all their years of training and purchase the latest editions as they
leave the program. The program also gives each categorical resident
$400 to use toward the purchase of Loupes.
