Research Services
Research represents an integral element in the
training of all physicians. While no specific segment of time is
allocated exclusively to research activities, each resident is
encouraged to participate in surgical research projects throughout
his or her training. Such participation is required at the R3, R4
and R5 levels. Clinical research is emphasized and done in
conjunction with normal clinical activities. Basic science and bench
research and animal laboratory facilities are not available.
Residents are provided with the opportunity to
present their studies at staff conferences, department conferences
and local, regional and national meetings. Education funds are
available for statistical analysis, manuscript preparation, and
audiovisual requirements. Transportation, lodging, meals and
registration fees are provided by the department to residents
presenting original research reports at regional or national
meetings.
Library
The Medical
Library at Swedish provides a selective, current collection of
clinical, research and administrative books, journals and
audiovisual materials. There are a number of electronic resources
available in the library, including EBSCO (Medicine), MDConsult,
Scientific American Medicine and full-text access to approximately
200 journals and 60 textbooks. Access to EBSCO and MDConsult is
available from your home.
Microsoft Office is available in the patron computer
room for use in preparing presentations and writing papers. CD-ROM
tutorials and self-help books are available to help use the
programs, and basic assistance can be provided by library staff.
Additional resources include a scanner, a videotape player and
audiotape players.
Library staff are available to do literature searches
and order items not available in our local collection. You can
request service in person or by fax, phone or e-mail.
Computers
The
program has computers available at all hours designated for use by
surgery residents exclusively. The computer equipment includes
Microsoft Professional Office software on every PC. Each PC is
connected to the Swedish Intranet, the Internet and to patient
information. Chief residents have PCs connected directly to the
surgery scheduling system for immediate updates on operating-room
cases. There are three PCs available in the surgery residents’
private library, to be shared by the R1s. The R2s, R3s, and R4s
share offices, each resident with their own PC. Each chief surgery
resident has their own office equipped with a PC and printer. The
printers are all laser quality with several having color printing
capabilities. One IBM laptop is available for M & M Conference and
to accommodate research projects. Microsoft PowerPoint is on each
PC, and the Swedish Medical Photography Department is available to
assist with slides and illustrations. Categorical residents are all
provided with PDA’s that will synchronize with their computers to
provide current pharmaceutical and patient information. Computer
training is available to residents via one-on-one training on campus
for some programs or more intensive full-day training sessions off
campus.
